Notebook ODMs enjoy on-month growth in March revenues

Notebook ODMs Quanta Computer, Compal Electronics and Wistron have announced their revenues for March, with each of the firms enjoying shipment growth on month.

Quanta reported consolidated revenues of NT$76.3 billion (US$2.58 billion) for March, up 8.98% on month, but down 33.4% on year with consolidated revenues for the first quarter reaching NT$224.62 billion, down 10.61% on year. Quanta also shipped 4.9 million notebooks in the month. The on-year drop was mainly due to strong orders from RIM for the PlayBook tablet in 2011, while Quanta also enjoyed strong orders from Apple for iMac in the first quarter of 2011, the market watchers noted.

The market watchers estimate that Quanta's notebook shipments in April will drop on month and then regain growth in May as shipments for new MacBook Pro and MacBook Air will gradually appear starting in April.

Compal announced consolidated revenues of NT$59.24 billion for March, up 2% on month, but dropped 14.86% on year, with consolidated revenues for the first quarter reached NT$161.07 billion, down 5.85% on year. Compal shipped 3.1 million notebooks in March and expects to achieve a double-digit sequential growth in the second quarter shipments with the annual shipment target being 48 million units.

Wistron saw its consolidated revenues reach NT$68.54 billion in March, up 20.37% on month and 24.6% on year, with consolidated revenues for the first quarter reached NT$176.97 billion, up 28.91% on year. Wistron shipped 3.4 million notebooks and tablets, 1.2 million desktop PCs, 1.5 million handheld devices, 120,000 servers, 400,000 LCD TVs and 800,000 LCD monitors in March. For the second quarter, Wistron expects its notebook shipments will grow 5% sequentially; however, its shipment volume will drop first in April and then climb up in May.
